According to data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction and analyzed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), in 2025, around a quarter of new homes were built with a two-story foyer. This is up slightly from 2024. However, despite the small increase, the market share of two-story foyers has trended downward since 2017.
We recently covered 2025’s trends for the number of bathrooms and bedrooms. This recent analysis from NAHB reveals that most new single-family homes are being built without a two-story foyer, both regionally and nationally.
In the United States, the share of new homes with a two-story foyer slightly rose from 24.6% to 25.6% in 2025, the highest level since 2022. This percentage remains below the levels recorded from 2017 to 2020. Two-story foyers are often considered energy-inefficient and are seen as undesirable by both builders and buyers. In short, two-story foyers have begun to fizzle out of home design, despite last year’s small increase.
